75 years ago today, Shanghai was liberated.

※ To commemorate the 75th anniversary of Shanghai’s liberation, yesterday morning, the "Theme Report on Celebrating the 75th Anniversary of Shanghai’s Liberation" was held in the auditorium of Shanghai University, under the guidance of the Propaganda Department of Shanghai Municipal Committee and the Shanghai Double Support Office, and co-sponsored by Shanghai Yongjunyoushu Foundation, Shanghai University and Jiefang Daily.

The report fully reviewed the whole process of the liberation of Shanghai, and many descendants of heroic martyrs who liberated Shanghai took the stage to share touching stories. Representatives of students from Shanghai University, families of military martyrs from Jing ‘an and Baoshan District, and social support units for supporting the army and their families attended the report meeting.

Everyone has said that today’s peaceful and happy life is hard-won. We should respect heroes, forge ahead, inherit the red gene and build a glorious city together.

The Shanghai campaign won a total military and political victory.

To understand the significance of the important historical event of Shanghai liberation 75 years ago, we must first understand what happened in that year.

At the report meeting, Zhang Yun, a professor at the School of Political Science of National Defense University and honorary president of the Shanghai Society for the History of the Communist Party of China, gave a keynote speech entitled "An Important Battle Related to China’s Historical Destiny-Celebrating the 75th Anniversary of the Victory of the Shanghai Campaign", giving a detailed introduction from three aspects: the basic concept of the Shanghai Campaign, the way to win the Shanghai Campaign and the significance of the victory of the Shanghai Campaign.

The Battle of Shanghai lasted for 16 days from May 12 to May 27, 1949. It was the last battle of the Battle of Crossing the River, also known as the last battle of the Battle of Beijing, Shanghai and Hangzhou. It is a large-scale urban battle in the strategic pursuit of the People’s Liberation War, and it is also an important battle related to the historical destiny of China.

"In this battle, the People’s Liberation Army seized a large number of weapons, equipment and military supplies, handed Shanghai into the hands of the people completely, won a total victory in military and political affairs, and created a miracle in the history of war." Zhang Yun believes that the main way for the People’s Liberation Army to win lies in four aspects: brilliant strategic guidance, orderly pre-war preparation, heroic urban attack and unique winning model.

Zhang Yun pointed out that the fate of Shanghai is actually a microcosm of the historical fate of modern China. Since modern times, the rise and fall of the Chinese nation, the safety of honor and disgrace have always been closely related to this city. The liberation of Shanghai is a change of the times and a turning point in history. In addition, the victory of the Shanghai campaign has profound and extensive contemporary significance, of which the most fundamental and crucial one is that those who win the hearts of the people win the world.

"In the new historical period, we must follow the Supreme Leader’s Socialism with Chinese characteristics Thought in the new era,’ Jiangshan is the people and the people are the mountains’ and forge ahead on the journey of the great rejuvenation of the Chinese nation." Zhang Yun said.

The story of martyrs is touching.

The liberation of Shanghai was exchanged for the blood of revolutionary martyrs. During the 16-day battle, PLA soldiers braved the bullets and marched forward bravely, and more than 24,000 officers and men were gloriously injured, and 7,613 officers and men gave their lives. Three descendants of heroic martyrs were invited to the report, and they told touching stories of their ancestors who fought bloody battles and liberated Shanghai.

The 87th Division of 29 army, 10th Corps of the Third Field Army, fired the first shot of Shanghai’s liberation, and then attacked Yuepu Town from the western front. Zhang Qiangsheng son of the general Zhang Xiaoyu, commander of the 87th Division, recalled that May 14th was a crucial day for the battle order to capture Yuepu Town. Zhang Qiangsheng, deputy commander Lin Naiqing and chief of staff Ye Keshou went to the front positions respectively to learn about the situation and plan and organize the second storm. By dawn on the 15th, the 87th Division occupied Yuepu Town, realizing the strategic intention of the Central Committee.

In the fierce battle in Yuepu, Hu Wenjie, head of the 259th Regiment of the 87th Division, was unfortunately shot while commanding the battle and died heroically. He was the highest-ranking commander of our army who died in the battle of Shanghai. Twenty-two days after Hu Wenjie’s death, his youngest son, Hu Jijun, was born.

"Father’s combat is characterized by being forward and sinking. Before the war, he personally approached reconnaissance and reconnaissance of the terrain. He tried to observe and command as close as possible in the battle and adjusted in time according to changes in the enemy’s situation." Hu Jijun said that in the battle on May 14th, Hu Wenjie’s hand-held carbine personally led the troops to continue to attack the enemy positions, and finally opened a breakthrough to drive the enemy out of Yuepu. Later, he organized troops to build fortifications and deploy defenses overnight. "According to comrades’ memories, my father didn’t sleep for more than 70 hours in his life, and he spent it in fighting with the enemy and bullets."

From January to May, 1949, there were 100 local martyrs who died for the liberation of Shanghai, including 68 Communist party member and revolutionary volunteers. Chen Guanning’s parents, Chen Erjin and Wang Manxia, could have enjoyed a good life, but they resolutely joined the Communist Party of China (CPC) and risked their lives to lurk in the Kuomintang for more than ten years.

"Before the start of the Shanghai campaign, parents sent people to Danyang to report the uprising action plan. Unfortunately, the action plan was discovered by Kuomintang agents. On May 9, my parents were arrested, along with me, who was only 11 months old. " With the rescue of the Shanghai Party organization, the Kuomintang authorities were forced to release Chen Guanning. On May 19th, Chen Erjin and Wang Manxia went to the execution ground in Song Park (now Zhabei Park), when Wang Manxia was pregnant. Later, the Central People’s Government ratified Chen Erjin and Wang Manxia as revolutionary martyrs.
