Cctv newsOn November 6th, 2018, the award ceremony of "Outstanding Computer Teachers Award Scheme in Colleges and Universities" was held in Peking University. Twenty-six outstanding teachers from nine domestic universities in computer science became the first winners, and received the award certificates jointly issued by the Teaching Steering Committee of Computer Specialty in Colleges and Universities of the Ministry of Education, china computer federation (CCF) and China Teacher Development Foundation.
It is understood that the "Award Scheme for Excellent Teachers of Computer Major in Colleges and Universities" does not have a complicated evaluation system. The evaluation criteria only include five aspects: teaching content, teacher-student interaction, concern for students, student participation and overall evaluation, and it does not add too much burden to colleges and teachers. The award scheme fully embodies the new requirements of "taking this as the foundation" and "four regressions", strengthens the teaching quality of undergraduate education, gives full play to the influence of high-tech enterprises, and guides social forces to jointly promote the teaching quality of higher education.
Academician Wu Jianping’s speech
Hao Ping, president of Peking University, first delivered a speech on behalf of the organizer, and he fully affirmed the significance of the award plan for talent training in colleges and universities. In his speech, Wu Jianping, director of the Teaching Steering Committee of Computer Specialty in Colleges and Universities of the Ministry of Education and academician of China Academy of Engineering, said that the new computer teaching steering committee will fully support the promotion and implementation of the award scheme and contribute to building a world-class computer discipline.
The award scheme was initiated by John Hopcroft, winner of Turing Award, winner of China Government Friendship Award, foreign academician of China Academy of Sciences, and Professor Gao Wen, chairman of china computer federation and academician of China Academy of Engineering. It is a public welfare award scheme with the support and guidance of the Ministry of Education and the National Natural Science Foundation of China. Recently, the Teaching Steering Committee of Computer Specialty in Colleges and Universities of the Ministry of Education, china computer federation and China Teachers’ Development Foundation have signed a cooperation agreement to jointly assist the sponsors of the award scheme and continue to promote the implementation of the award scheme.
Speech by Professor Hopcroft
At the award ceremony, 79-year-old Professor Hopcroft called on all colleges and universities to attach great importance to undergraduate teaching and care about the growth of students and young teachers.

Academician Gao Wen introduced the evaluation process of the award scheme. In the first half of 2018, the reward program was implemented in nine universities in China. Basic courses related to computer science were selected, peer experts were organized to evaluate classroom teaching, and excellent teachers were rewarded. According to Professor Hopcroft’s proposal, the evaluation criteria include five aspects: teaching content, teacher-student interaction, concern for students, student participation and overall evaluation. All participating universities actively participated in the competition, and the response was strong. After the judging Committee confirmed that 26 teachers were selected from 106 participating teachers as the first batch of award-winning teachers.
The award scheme is supported by ten high-tech enterprises with important social influence, including ByteDance, innovation works, Didi Chuxing, Baidu, Microsoft Research Asia, Shangtang Technology, Alibaba, Iflytek, Lenovo and 360. At the award ceremony, Professor Hopcroft, Academician Gao Wen and Chairman Yang Zhoufu jointly presented donation certificates to the representatives of ten enterprises to affirm their sense of social responsibility in supporting education. Dr. Zhang Hongjiang, Dean of ByteDance Institute of Technology and Strategy, spoke as a representative of the donated enterprises, expressing the common aspiration of the relevant enterprises to seek talents for high-tech talents and hope to unite and cooperate to lead the technological development in the field of artificial intelligence.
At the award ceremony, the award-winning teachers took the stage one by one and received medals and certificates from the award-winning guests. Professor Hu Shimin from the Department of Computer Science of Tsinghua University expressed his gratitude to the award-winning teachers on behalf of the award-winning teachers, and shared his own thoughts on the implementation of the fundamental task of cultivating people by virtue and the balanced development of higher education. President Wang Shuguo of Xi ‘an Jiaotong University spoke on behalf of the universities participating in the award scheme, highly praised the significance of the establishment of the award scheme, and said that Xi ‘an Jiaotong University will continue to support related work and make greater contributions in related fields.
After the award ceremony, the leaders and guests attending the meeting took photos with the award-winning teachers as a souvenir. Subsequently, a series of activities will be held, such as a symposium between enterprise representatives and award-winning teachers, and a seminar on next year’s evaluation scheme. In the future, more relevant departments of domestic universities will be invited to participate in the award scheme.
This award scheme is the first joint action funded by ten high-tech enterprises. It aims to promote colleges and universities to pay more attention to undergraduate classroom teaching, effectively improve the relationship between teaching and scientific research, and promote the overall improvement of teaching quality of computer specialty in China. On the one hand, the establishment of the incentive plan reflects the strong demand of society, industry and enterprises to improve the quality of computer innovative talents training, on the other hand, it also provides reference for social forces in other industries to promote the cultivation of innovative talents.
